There are literary records and archaeological remains that indicate the existence of wine-growing in the northwest of
the Peninsula since Roman days, if not before. Until very recently the wines prevailing in the region were red, coarse,
acidulous and with low alcohol strength. From the 1970s onwards white wines became the region’s standard-bearers. It
was in the following decade that SOGRAPE invested in the northwest of Portugal, and today it has in its portfolio Vinho
Verde brands of a high, nationally and internationally acknowledged, quality

Consistent with its policy of quality wines and of the promotion of noble domestic vine varieties, in 1980 SOGRAPE acquired Quinta de Azevedo, in the heart of the Vinho Verde Region, near the city of Barcelos. The supply of grapes of exceptional quality was thus ensured, especially for the development of estate wines.

Quinta de Azevedo has a remarkable heritage quite apart from that more directly linked to its main purpose, the production of high-quality white wines. Indeed, not only its vineyards and wine centre deserve particular attention, but the same applies to the magnificent manor-house, dating back to the 11th century, which was totally and carefully rebuilt in 1982, under the watchful supervision of Fernando Guedes and his wife, Mafalda da Cunha Guedes.

It was when the manor-house was being rebuilt that new vineyards started being planted, using the best regional vine varieties, and a wine centre with a dimension suitable to SOGRAPE’s project and totally dedicated to the production of white wines in particular, was set up.

In the Vinho Verde Region, and apart from the QUINTA DE AZEVEDO brand, SOGRAPE selects quality grapes and wines from private growers which make up the flagship brand GAZELA’s final blend. SOGRAPE’s Vinho Verde range was complemented in the late 1990s with the launch of an Alvarinho variety wine, MORGADIO DA TORRE. Especially for this variety, this wine is produced from selected grapes in the Monção sub-region.
