Tasting Notes
FERREIRA VINTAGE PORTO 2003 is a powerful wine, showing a deep and opaque red hue with hints of violet. Its aroma is very intense and powerful. Salient in it are very ripe black fruits (such as blackberry, cassis and plum) and balsamic and resin-like notes (of rock-rose and cedar) resulting from the combination of Upper Corgo and Douro Superior wines. This aroma, typical of years with excellent maturations, provides it with a remarkable elegance and complexity. In the mouth, it is a wine of strong structure and great concentration, with lively and high-quality tannins, well integrated in the wine’s body, which, combined with the complexity of its aroma, provide it with an excellent balance. It has a very long, harmonious and very elegant finish. A great wine, to be kept for several decades.

Varieties
FERREIRA VINTAGE PORTO was made from a careful selection of top-quality grapes, especially from the varieties Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. The grapes come from the company's own estates in the Cima Corgo area, near Pinhão (Quinta do Seixo, Quinta do Porto and Quinta do Caêdo), as well as in Douro Superior (Quinta da Leda), and surrounding areas. The year 2003 saw extreme weather conditions and it was one of the hottest on record.
Winemaking
The grapes, hand-picked at an optimal maturation stage, were vinified at our wineries at Quinta do Seixo (Cima Corgo) and Quinta da Leda (Douro Superior), following Porto wine’s traditional method. Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats and in robot-operated presses, with skin maceration, and under controlled temperature. It was halted through the addition of wine alcohol at the ideal point for each vine variety. The wines, naturally sweet and rich, were deeply red and full-bodied, with great power and aromatic concentration.
Ageing
The exceptional wines chosen to make up the final blend of this FERREIRA VINTAGE PORTO 2003 were taken to the traditional lodges at V.N.Gaia where they were kept in ideal conditions of temperature and humidity. Their gradual evolution was constantly monitored by the oenology team which, after numerous tasting, confirmed the excellence of the wines and prepared the final blend.
