The Wine
CALLABRIGA is a new wine from the old world, an exciting new brand of genuine quality from Portugal. \"Our passion for great wines led us to search for the unique flavours of the Portuguese Wine Regions\" - Salvador Guedes, President of Sogrape Vinhos.
Tasting Notes
CALLABRIGA DOURO 2006 is a lively red coloured wine, with purple shades. Complex aromas dominated by notes of cinnamon, cocoa and noble wood. Dense, balanced, with smooth and firm tannins, its finish is dominated by fresh fruits.
Serving Suggestions
Delicious as an accompaniment to meat and aromatic seasoning, this wine is at its best at a temperature of 16º-18º C. Try it with leg of lamb with rosemary.
Varieties
CALLABRIGA DOURO 2006 is produced with Tinta Roriz and other grape varieties of the region (Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional).
Climate
2006 was a hot and damp year, with atypical rain fall. The Summer season consisted of very dry periods or heavy rain. This resulted in uneven maturation levels, and extra care and attention was paid to the selection of the parcels and grapes used in Callabriga. Hand-picking began in September.
Winemaking
This wine is made at Quinta da Leda Sogrape’s modern winery in the Douro region, from grapes with ideal maturation and balance. After gentle crushing and complete de-stemming, the grapes are fermented under controlled temperatures, with gentle maceration, to achieve colour, fruit aromas and soft tannin extraction.
Ageing
Once the malolactic fermentation is complete, the wines are kept separately for about one year in 225 litre new oak barrels, and their development carefully monitored and tasted to guarantee the preservation of fruity aromas and the future creation of a final harmonious blend. The final blend is bottled without cold-stabilisation and kept in bottle for around 6 months before being released. CALLABRIGA DOURO has good potential to evolve, and will age well in bottle for 5 years.
