The Wine
CALLABRIGA is a new wine from the old world, an exciting new brand of genuine quality from Portugal. "Our passion for great wines led us to search for the unique flavours of the Portuguese Wine Regions" - Salvador Guedes, President of Sogrape Vinhos.

Tasting Notes
CALLABRIGA ALENTEJO 2005 is a red-violet coloured wine. Very intense, its aroma is dominated by black fruits and aromatic herbs such as fennel and gorse. Full bodied; CALLABRIGA ALENTEJO 2005 has lively, firm tannins, and a robust finish.

Serving Suggestions
Served at an ideal temperature of 16º-18º C, this wine is a very good accompaniment to dishes such as caramelized goats cheese with pumpkin seeds and roquette salad.

Varieties
CALLABRIGA ALENTEJO 2005 was produced from a blend of red varieties Aragonês (a.k.a. Tinta Roriz), Alfrocheiro Preto and Alicante Bouschet, expressing the region's characteristic sensory intensity.

Climate
2005 experienced a very dry and extremely cold winter, reaching minus temperatures. The vegetative state was thus shorter, the budding having occurred only in March. In contrast, the summer was extremely hot and dry. The picking of the grape took place in August under extremely hot weather conditions, continuing throughout the month of September, registering no precipitation. These conditions disturbed the maturation process, presenting grapes with low acidity and not very concentrated polyphenols.

Winemaking
CALLABRIGA is made from carefully selected grapes, using the most advanced winemaking techniques at Sogrape's Herdade do Peso winery in the Alentejo. After gentle crushing and complete de stemming, the grapes are fermented with skin maceration under controlled temperatures (28ºC), for around 10 days.

Ageing
Following malolactic fermentation, the wines are kept separately for about one year in 225 litre oak barrels, and their development is carefully monitored so as to guarantee the preservation of fruity aromas and the creation of a final harmonious blend. The final blend is bottled without cold-stabilisation, and the bottles are kept in cellar for about 6 months before being released. CALLABRIGA ALENTEJO will age well in bottle for 3 years.
