The Wine
CALLABRIGA is a Red Douro wine with a modern, intense and elegant profile, created in order to show the versatility of Douro
wines. CALLABRIGA is one of the most recent wines from Casa Ferreirinha, the brand with a greatest tradition in Douro quality wines and one of its main world-wide standard-bearers.
Tasting Notes
CALLABRIGA 2000 has a bright red hue with purple tones. Its bouquet is intense and complex with reminiscences of ripe red fruit
(redcurrant and cherry) and black fruit (blackcurrant and blackberry). There are also fragrances of cedar and eucalyptus, and spices (nutmeg and pepper), originating from the quality of the wood used in maturing. It is a full-bodied wine, well-balanced with fine-quality tannins and discreet acidity, both well wrapped in its structure. It has a lingering and complex finish. These characteristics make it ready for drinking now.
Serving Suggestions
CALLABRIGA is an intense, elegant and generous wine that goes well with red meat, big game, venison, boar and strong cheese. It improves if opened 1-2 hours prior to serving and may require decanting, if aged. Serve between 17-18º C.
Varieties
CALLABRIGA is made from grapes from the traditional Douro vine varieties -Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca - planted in the Douro Superior region, near Barca d’Alva and grown at Sogrape's Quinta da Leda and high-quality nearby vineyards.
Winemaking
The grapes, chosen from the plots with more balanced maturation and hand-picked, are vinified at Quinta da Leda's excellent wine centre. After full stem-removal and soft crushing, the grapes go into stainless steel vats and/or robot-operated wine presses, where fermentation takes place, with prolonged maceration and pumping-over, under controlled temperature. A long post-fermentation maceration then follows, in order to achieve a higher aromatic extraction making possible the transfer of quality elements in the grape skins to the wine.
Ageing and Storage
CALLABRIGA is taken to Vila Nova de Gaia between October and December, where it matures in new oak-wood 225 lt. barrels for about a year. The final blend is made from a qualitative selection from numerous tasting that make it possible to choose the best wines, cask by cask, variety by variety. The final blend undergoes slight filtering before bottling. Sediment may form with time. Store horizontally, in a dry and cool place.
