The Wine
SOGRAPE RESERVA DOURO RED is a very well-balanced, full-bodied and aromatic wine, a representative of the best the Douro region has to offer in red wines. The Sogrape Reserva wine range was created in order to reflect all the diversity and huge potential of a true reserva, made from the native grapes of the best Portuguese wine regions, Douro, Alentejo, Dão and Bairrada.

Tasting Notes
SOGRAPE RESERVA DOURO RED 2001 has a bright red hue and an intense and complex bouquet reminiscent of ripe fruit (gooseberry, cherry and blackberry). Also noticeable are balmy flavours, of cedar and eucalyptus, as well as spicy ones (nutmeg) as a result of the quality of the wood used in its maturation. In the mouth, it is a full-bodied and well-balanced wine in its discreet acidity as well as in its fine-quality tannins, showing the harmony typical of this harvest. With a lingering and soft finish it may be drunk at once or after evolution in the bottle, for which great nobility can be anticipated.

Serving Suggestions
SOGRAPE RESERVA DOURO RED is ideal with meat, game and rich cheese. It should be served at a temperature of between
16º and 18º C.

Varieties
SOGRAPE RESERVA DOURO RED 2001 was made from traditional red vine varieties - Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz e Tinta Barroca - selected from the company's own vineyards, as well as from those of private wine-growers, in the high areas of the Douro where they reach a good maturity and acidity.

Winemaking
The combination of a relatively mild summer and a dry month of September, which characterized the year 2001, provided excellent maturing conditions. On arrival at Sogrape's Vila Real winery, the hand-picked grapes underwent stalk-removal and were softly crushed . Vinification took place with skin maceration, followed by soft pressing and fermentation in French oak hogsheads with batonnage.

Ageing and Storage
The wines making up SOGRAPE RESERVA DOURO RED 2001 matured in new oak hogsheads for about a year. Following numerous tastings and a strict selection the final blend was prepared which, after filtration, was bottled and matured in the bottle prior to being put in the market. As it is a very good-quality wine it may be kept for a few years (keep bottle horizontally).
