The Wine
A selection of top-quality wines from the 2005 vintage was brought together to create the strong, full and fruity character of SANDEMAN LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE 2005. Aged for about four years this wine was bottled following a slight tuning, which gives it the advantage of being ready for drinking and keeping the style of a single-year wine.
Tasting Notes
SANDEMAN LBV 2005 has a deep red, almost opaque, hue. Its bouquet is very complex and intense, showing the presence of warm red fruits, violet floral notes as well as exotic woods. In the mouth it has a powerful attack, showing great structure and firm tannins, with red fruits again in evidence. It has a long-lasting, thrilling finish.
Food Pairing
SANDEMAN LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE 2005 is ideal with chocolate-rich desserts (mousse, parfaits, cakes and truffles), red fruit tarts, creamy cheeses, or on its own, say, accompanying a cigar.
Varieties
SANDEMAN LBV 2005 was made from traditional red grape varieties of the Douro Demarcated Region, especially Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, all carefully selected from the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior areas.
Storing
SANDEMAN LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE 2005 is bottled when fully mature and does not require decanting. However, if kept for some time, it may develop a sediment or lees, in which case it should be decanted. For perfect enjoyment it should be served in a large glass. Bottles should be kept horizontally so as to keep its cork moist, in a dry place and at a constant temperature (16ºC – 18ºC), avoiding strong light.
Shelf Life
SANDEMAN LBV 2005 should be served within 12 to 18 months of bottling. However, as it is a superior quality Porto, it has a long ageing potential.
Open Bottle Shelf Life
Once the bottle of SANDEMAN LBV 2005 has been opened the wine should be drunk in a few days, so as not to lose its initial freshness.
Winemaking
SANDEMAN LBV 2005 was made in accordance with Porto’s traditional method. Grapes were hand-picked at an ideal maturation stage and pressed. Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats under controlled temperatures and was arrested at the optimum point by the addition of grape alcohol. The resulting wine is naturally sweet and rich, deeply red and full-bodied, with great aromatic concentration.
Ageing
After the vintage the wine remained in the Douro and was racked for the first time over the winter. During racking the necessary final corrections in alcohol strength and acidity were carried out. It was taken to Vila Nova de Gaia the following spring and entered the traditional Porto wine maturation process, in 640-litre casks, characteristic of the Sandeman style. During this period the wine was subjected to numerous rackings, analyses and tastings that made it possible to monitor its ageing, as well as to intervene with blendings and corrections whenever necessary. The final blend was arrived at after rigourous wine selection.
