In 1975, in the midst of the post-revolutionary frenzy (25 April 1974 military coup in Portugal),
SOGRAPE maintained its investment policy for regional diversification and set itself up at Anadia,
in the Bairrada Region, where the wine profile was ideally suited both for Mateus and for the future
Beiras regional wines. In this decade SOGRAPE’s investments were extended into other strategic areas, including the glass industry and banking. SOGRAPE’s formidable growth did not really change its business model, which benefited from the strength of family ties linking most of its partners and, above all, from a corporate culture where the labour force shared the family spirit. The long tenure of the Board guaranteed a wealth of experience and a remarkable continuity of corporate strategy (it should be stressed that, from 1948 to 1963, Fernando van Zeller Guedes was always accompanied by Walter Stam and Bernardo Joaquim do Carmo). |
