The Dão Demarcated Region, with an approximate area of 376,000 hectares, is located among very mountainous areas and valleys with soft hills and slopes.
A cold and rainy climate in winter and dry in the summer, along with the above-mentioned relief, provides unique conditions for wine production. Quinta dos Carvalhais, where SOGRAPE has focused on the production of the best Dão wines, has all the characteristics of the Region’s estates and is one of the main landmarks of Portuguese viticulture.

Purchased by SOGRAPE in 1989, Quinta dos Carvalhais is currently one of the main standard-bearers in Portuguese viticulture, with wines of great quality and prestige that are the result of careful viticulture and oenology, supported by a modern vinification centre.

The purchase of Quinta dos Carvalhais coincided with huge SOGRAPE investments in the Dão, with direct intervention in wine production and the building of modern vinification facilities. The planting of new vineyards using reputable regional vine varieties got under way, in a project that revolutionised the history of viticulture in the Dão.

Indeed, Quinta dos Carvalhais has attracted the attention of many professionals and private individuals, both Portuguese and foreign. Apart from the interest of many well-known oenologists, Quinta dos Carvalhais also attracts the interest of many wine-growers in the region who deliver their grapes to the estate.

Complementing the classic brands GRÃO VASCO and DUQUE DE VISEU, high-quality wines are produced at Quinta dos Carvalhais under the eponymous name QUINTA DOS CARVALHAIS, such as the varietal Touriga Nacional and Encruzado, along with Reserva. Confirming a permanent focus on innovation, COLHEITA TARDIA (late vintage) from the Encruzado variety and ESPUMANTE CLÁSSICO RESERVA (sparkling wine) based on Touriga Nacional and Encruzado have been launched under the same brand.

Given its exceptional conditions, Quinta dos Carvalhais has a meadow of about 12 hectares, providing a grazing area for sheep that produce milk for the famous regional cheese.
